Coaching

My coaching philosophy, which will be used to achieve this vision, is based strongly on discipline and respect. I have high expectations for my players to be devoted to reaching their full potential both on and off the ice. Good sportsmanship is essential. It is required that my players always show respect for teammates, opponents, coaches, officials, parents and fans. I will enforce a strong work ethic that will help players excel in their basic hockey skills such as skating, passing, shooting and puck possession. We will use both on-ice and off-ice training to develop a skating team without peers. I expect players to use their determination and focus both during practice time and game time. I will encourage them to be team players and contribute all of their efforts. I will use positive reinforcement to reward them for their accomplishments and to help them learn from their mistakes. Overall, hockey should be a positive learning experience for players, coaches and parents. Each player on the team should try hard, be safe and have fun!.

Hockey has been a major part of my life for the past 40 years. I began skating at age 3 and have continued on as a hockey player, coach and referee. During this time, I have gained valuable experiences, which have allowed me to create a positive and effective coaching philosophy. I have the knowledge and a love for the game of hockey that will allow me to develop exceptional players.

As a child, I played travel hockey until I was a freshman in high school.  I then played 4 years of Varsity hockey at Forest Hills Central. After high school I played one year at Grand Valley State University. During this time I also began my career as a referee. I started refereeing at age 15, and I have continued to referee high school hockey for 22 years. I have also been an official for the NCAA (CCHA) for 15 years.  In addition, I spent 4 years officiating Minor Pro hockey (UHL / AHL).

Some of my most rewarding and fulfilling experiences in hockey have been obtained through coaching. I was the head coach of Forest Hills Central JV for 6 years. I was also Co-Head Coach of Grand Rapids Christian for 2 years, and I coached Bantam travel hockey for 2 years.  For the past two years I have coached the Rams JV team, winning league and/or playoff championships in both years.

Professionally I am dedicated to helping athletes improve and grow within their sport. I own Acceleration Sports Training Center and the majority of the athletes I train are hockey players of all ages from youth to professional (AHL, NHL, NCAA, CCHA, and College Club). I have trained athletes through Acceleration for over nine years.
