Try Hockey for Free
The Rams Hockey Association hosts three to four Try Hockey for Free events each season. This event is geared toward kids ages 4 to 8 and its goal is to introduce a new group of kids to the wonderful sport of hockey. Each event is held at the Cedar Rock Sports Plex and is completely free to participants. All required gear is provided at the rink or kids can bring their own gear if they have it. We provide an online registration format through USA Hockey for participants, and we are also set up to register kids on the day of the event.
Participants need to bring the following items:
• A loose-fitting pair of pants or snow pants
• A pair of gloves (mittens are acceptable)
• A helmet (bike helmet or hockey helmet)
We will have skates at the rink for participants to use free of charge!
ON-ICE EXPERIENCE: There will be plenty of coaches on hand to help give you a great hockey experience, you will get an opportunity to learn the basic skills of hockey and enjoy your time on the ice. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact board@ramshockey.org

Learn to Skate: Head Coach Mitch Parsons
Our Learn to Skate program welcomes new skaters from ages 4 to 13, no prior skating experience is needed. Graduates of our Learn to Skate program can go on to be hockey players, figure skaters, or even just have one more way to enjoy a Michigan winter or open skates. Our goal for Learn to Skate is to introduce the kids to skating and having fun on the ice. Kids will be instructed on how to properly stand on the ice, get up after they fall down, and stop without using the boards. Our methodology includes small area activities where kids play fun games and work on new skills.
We typically start out with kids having little or no experience skating and introduce them to the fundamentals. While our Learn to Skate program is for any skater, we do typically gear our sessions towards future hockey players.
Our Learn to Skate program is separated into four six-week sessions. While we encourage everyone to participate in as many sessions as they are able, we understand that sometimes only one or two sessions work with a family’s schedule. We start each Learn to Skate session with the same format such that joining any session will allow your child to meet our goals for our Learn to Skate program.
Required Equipment: Kids need to have a properly fitting helmet (bike helmet, hockey helmet, etc.), skates, neck guard, and some sort of hand protection/gloves as mandatory equipment.
Optional Equipment: Elbow pads are very strongly recommended, followed by knee pads/shin guards and lastly hockey pants or snow pants.
Borrowing Equipment: The Rams Hockey Association has limited gear available to borrow during the sessions. It is first come, first served and you will need to sign up for a fitting time separate from the first day of the session. Information on gear fitting sessions will be provided at registration.
